We were approached by a group of professors and researchers from Stanford University (who were referred to us by one of our partners from a previous project) to help bring their idea for a new product to life.   

As specialists in optometry conducting research on the human eye and corrective vision, they were looking for a product team to build their first prototype of an app that defines and measures the parameters of the eye.

The goal was to build an easy-to-use, yet highly advanced, digital product that helps patients choose the right contact lenses. Since our partners (the researchers) were academics with no prior experience in building and designing digital products, we needed to fully understand their ideas and figure out how to turn them into a working digital product.  

The app was to function by capturing photos of the human eye and use complex algorithms to calculate the appropriate corrective lenses for the user. 


Designing with vision

While the researchers provided us with the mathematical calculations and algorithms for the foundation of the technology, we were tasked with building an entire product around their vision, including the design, UX, branding, and app development.  

Even though the task was to create an experimental prototype as a test case, we created a fully functioning iOS app, opposed to merely a clickable prototype. This gave our academic partners the ability to test and experiment with the app in a real-world setting.

Coding with science-backed algorithms  

The PlacidO project was a perfect example of how we utilize design and development to solve complex issues and deliver a superior working product from the ground-up. We were able to create a fully functioning prototype that allowed the researchers to test and validate their concept, ultimately leading to their [successful acquisition in 2022](https://eyewire.news/news/waldo-announces-the-acquisition-of-placid0?c4src=article:infinite-scroll).

BabyWeather

BabyWeather is the first outfit planner app helping new parents avoid the stress of dressing up their little ones. Whether it is sunny, rainy, snowy or warm outside, BabyWeather suggests the ideal clothing for babies.

It is one of BitRaptors first own product, which we are building together with Bartha solutions. It is currently used by more than 7000 daily active users.

Finding the best outfits based on real-time weather data

The tips section is full of additional advice on dressing a baby for different scenarios, and the most important things to keep in mind in extreme weather.

User can also add multiple children to the app, and it will recommend different set of clothes based on age and preferences.

The clothing suggestions are based on the actual weather conditions and forecasts of the user's current or manually chosen location. BabyWeather provides outfit recommendations for babies aged 0-3 with delightful and simple to understand illustrations.

The app is switching between dark and light mode based on the time of use.

Corvinus is a top-tier university in Budapest, Hungary (with approx. 11,500 yearly enrollment) that approached us to create a new system for their student and administration portals. They wanted an app for students and teachers to manage enrollment, scheduling, and other university-life affairs with ease and simplicity.   

Importantly, they also wanted the app to be modern and cutting-edge so it would appeal to a tech-literate student population with high expectations of what a digital product should offer. That’s where we came in. 

To solve these issues, we first wanted to better understand the needs of the student population and university population. Therefore, we initiated user research interviews in small focus groups to identify pain points and areas of focus.   

The data collected allowed us to start building a platform around the needs of the users (students) and how they wish to interact with the product by mapping out the user journey. This was a crucial step before taking on development, as it allowed us to design an agile and intuitive system around the specific needs of the students and university administrators. 


For the app itself, we wanted to create a robust system that was powerful and functional enough to handle the depth of the university’s needs, yet sleek and accessible to appeal to the younger student demographic. We also had to incorporate and build upon legacy data from the previous 3rd party system to sync and format data with the updated platform.  

Through creative development and constant iteration, we began building a dynamic and intuitive system, based on BFF (Backend for Frontend) technical backbone, where the admins of the app can modify, update, and create content without the need of new releases. This means that content and information can be shared to engage student and teacher audiences quickly, easily, and at any time. 


During the development, we continued to collect and monitor user feedback to make fine-tune adjustments to the UX flows and learn what works and what doesn’t. The result was a beautifully designed app where students can collect and share information, receive important push notifications, schedule courses and exams, and even an interactive map of the campus (plus more).   

The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and we’re thrilled to have provided Corvinus University with a modern and innovative app worthy of their students and faculty. 


Classical music streaming service

A Way to Music is a Netflix-like subscription-based web app for one of Hungary's leading symphonic orchestras, Danubia. The orchestra's goal was to reach as many people as possible with their message: the joy of music. The website offers mood-based musical fragments, family and youth performances, complete concerts, and live broadcasts. These hundreds of videos become available after a simple registration or subscription.

Part of the product is a unique loyalty program that allows listeners to gain points by streaming videos or purchasing tickets and season passes for concerts. Users can achieve different loyalty levels that provide additional benefits, like discounts on all ticket purchases, rehearsal visits, and meet and greet opportunities with the artists.

SlowTime is an online platform to help users develop their mindfulness meditation skills. With a subscription, users can reach multiple collections of guided materials and standalone voice and music content from a selection of instructors.

Users can unlock videos in collections by watching videos one-by-one in order. They also get personalized tasks, which they can complete after each session.

There is also a dashboard available for users, where they can see the amount of time they have meditated.

We have built a unique CMS platform, where we not only manage the content of the web app, but also see data reports of the site.

We also created the SlowTime brand, including their logo, visual elements and also a relaxing animation, we have been using for videos during meditation sessions.

Privacy policy

We built an app for the world's first stress ECG monitoring device, designed for runners and athletes, that measures heart rate and athletic performance through smart activewear technology.  

Heartbit, an innovative tech startup, approached us with the task of developing a Strava-like product that integrates with their wearable medtech device to provide health and performance data to the user. 


The app itself was to have a wide-range of capabilities that measure health metrics, in real-time, while the user exercises and performs physical activity. Through communication between the wearable device and the app, alerts are sent to the user for heart anomalies and other fitness performance data.  

Due to the complexity of this project, we had to create a completely customized solution that meets highly demanding software and hardware requirements. What’s more, we were asked to do all of this on a tight deadline. 


Merging digital and physical

In order to create a custom integration between the app and the hardware, we worked closely together with the manufacturer to build customized firmware solutions that integrate seamlessly with the wearable tech. This was based upon bluetooth connectivity between the app and the monitoring device, backed by cloud-based data storage.  

To correct for inaccuracies experienced with the GPS sensors on Android devices, we implemented Kalman filtering logic to filter outliers in the data. We also had to write a **customized sdk** and hardware definitions that can handle updates and error handling wirelessly, so users can receive and deploy updates directly through the app. 


Seamless Bluetooth connectivity

Through using advanced design and development techniques, we were able to deliver a sleek and visually appealing app that displayed the large amount of data collected from the wearable device to the user. The app collects, analyzes, and visualizes a variety of complex performance and activity insights, including speed, altitude, and a multitude of heart rate metrics.

## How to release a new app every second

Imagine a remote service that adapts to any mobile app, providing everything that’s required for UI rendering. Normally, there is no app-side logic (even to a small extent) and everything is on the backend side. Instead, with the new method, everything is calculated on the server side and deployed in building blocks to display the UI. The app’s core responsibility is to show these building blocks correctly, and in the proper order, to handle every known building block’s action.

For an example of this in action, let’s imagine an app’s storefront page video game. We see multiple Xbox, Nintendo, and PlayStation games available for purchase, some new articles and reviews, along with hardware listings. However, there is actually no storefront page in the app itself. Instead, the server sends down a building block for each element in the UI that becomes visible to the user. We also send down building blocks for a credit card input field, widgets for ad campaigns, or even a welcome video.

Now imagine this is completely editable and configurable from the API side at any time. The app essentially becomes a thin client that only serves to show the UI and accept user interactions. In a nutshell, _the logic is on the server-side and not in the client itself_. Therefore, we can adjust it without releasing the actual application and even swap the source of data behind the API.

 

#### The possibilities of Backend for Frontend (BFF)
 

This technique is known as Backend for Frontend (BFF) and is a technique that calculates and represents the content of the UI on the backend side, then pushes it down to the mobile application (preferably via one single API call). Behind the endpoint, there can be multiple sources (rest APIs, microservices, etc.). Once the application gets the server’s data where logic is applied, it renders itself based on the data, and the logic is on the server-side. Technically, the API aggregates the data from various sources into one stream of heterogeneous data representing the UI with every required descriptor.

**Note**: This does not send down the UI in a JS or HTML code instead of product-bound UI descriptors.

BFF is helpful outside of the mobile environment also, but in this assessment, we will focus exclusively on the mobile experience. Thus, if we’re looking from a particular abstraction, a list can represent any mobile app page. We must find a suitable model (and the mobile app knows these models) for each element (widget) in the list. Then the application can render it accordingly.

In this way, the widget, which is a self-contained entity on the UI that encapsulates specific structures and actions, is the critical concept. The mobile app has multiple **widgets**, and these widgets can be shown on the pages (any pages). The app then knows what actions the **widget** can (and cannot) do. Therefore, if we get a “Log in” widget, we know how it looks and what can be done with it (e.g. display a title and initiate log in).

In this case, the server-side can send down and control which widgets display and in what order, essentially producing a viewable page. Besides that, in the same API call, all the configurations arrive simultaneously to fill in the widget correctly. (Example response for a login screen)

The app needs to be aware of the widget model, as updates and releases are inevitable when new widget types are introduced. However, these releases are less and less frequent in the application’s life cycle. Regardless, data redundancy can occasionally be an issue, so careful planning is essential. Fortunately, we also eliminate code redundancy from the client-side by not needing to write code on all platforms ( just once on the backend side).

If the application knows the widgets, we can freely configure them remotely. This can be done via CMS or through configurable algorithms and gathered analytics as well. Configuring a set of widgets means creating pages remotely, and not just pages, but also what the application can do through action producing widgets (read more below).

As BFF is experience-based, calculating this experience is no different from the application’s point of view. As long as we respect the required widget representation model, the app will be able to handle it. Data can come from sources A, B, C, or D and we can mix and match them or even white label as needed.

With all its advantages, BFF is still not a silver bullet. Certain parts of the application can’t be (or can be but with experience degradation) easily managed by a BFF API connection (e.g. how the app starts). However, BFF is an effective and high performance approach for showing and changing the content of an application. Essentially we can give an application a brand new look and release it anytime we want.

In a nutshell, BFF is an excellent approach to aggregate and apply some logic to existing APIs that the app handles separately. We can control how we represent the content, as long the app knows which models it can render on its own.

 

#### Ok, but what about the configuration?
 

Since our goal is to customize both the application and the content, we must specify two layers of customization:

- Page-based customization is the BFF API where the page content is tailored to the needs of the user.
- The application’s behaviour can vary based on various predicates. (e.g. how many tabs, how it boots, etc.). A configuration service is responsible for controlling where the application retrieves such actions.

So, how do we apply them? As users produce multiple interactions within the application, we must log them anonymously in our system and create user personas to understand and gather insights. Let’s take one measurement, High Frequent Buyers (made up for an example) or “HFB users”. We’ll define this group of users as people who buy something twice per month. We can specify this persona as a user that initiates at least two payment events per month. Since we already know they’re using the app, we can speculate that they might need a different representation of the application to buy as fast as possible. In this way, our analytics system can provide a boolean flag that tells us if the user fits the criteria.

Then to provide the right content to the right people, we need a targeting system that allows us to create content based on predicates. We can specify a list for frequent buyers and non-frequent buyers also. In sum, with the correct list (BFF), the right content is shown to the right person.

 

#### Creating an “experimental service”
 

A content management system is essential to assemble a set of widgets on how the page displays. Anyone can put together what an HFB should retrieve (e.g. more predefined baskets or recommendations based on older purchases) or a non-HFB (more ad banners and inspirational content for people who use the application less frequently). But how can we configure these?

Since the application itself must be configured, we must use an App Configuration system based upon analytics. For example, the HFB users will have a “Store Listing” as the first tab, and non-HFB users will get a “Discovery and Reviews” page as the first tab. In this way, the possibilities are endless.

Through this approach, we can set up experiments as well. A/B testing, Alpha Beta testing, and country builds are all possible since the application doesn’t need to know how the content and configuration are produced. We only need to set up predicates (user group segmentations) and the right content will land in the hands of the right user at the right time.

And this is what I call an experimentation service.

In a nutshell, the experimentation service has four components.

1. Analytics system. 
 Can identify users based on various attributes.
2. Targeting system 
 Where we can specify user groups and send data based on user group insights, and this system can gather the right set of users based on predicates.
3. Content management system 
 Where anybody can set up content for user groups can also configure widgets without developer help.
4. Configuration service + BFF APIs 
 The right set of data is consumed via these endpoints by the application.

The iteration speed is essential when we’re scaling out. As we grow, verifying assumptions will be crucial. To allow this to happen, we must be able to set up experiments, and we must be able to measure them to gain meaningful insights about what the users want and how they interact with us. The application might have to behave differently in the hands of different users, so it is important to respond to diverse sets of needs. Remote configurability in both the application behaviour and its content can allow us to answer those needs and learn even faster. Having a separate app for every distinct user, which we can release every second, will help us in this journey.

We teamed up with Disco to create a GM leaderboard that not only presents their capabilities but serves as an open-source example for developers looking to interact with Disco's API. A beautiful representation of user data, this project embodies Disco's philosophy of equality and ownership.
